Day-by-day recovery timeline
Day 0 — Surgery day
Procedure and discharge
The surgery takes 1.5–2.5 hours under general anaesthesia. Most patients are discharged to their hotel the same day. A nasal splint is placed on the bridge, and soft internal supports may be placed inside the nostrils. Mild grogginess from anaesthesia is normal.
Days 1–3 — Early recovery
Peak swelling and bruising
Swelling and bruising around the eyes peaks at day 2–3. Cold compresses and head elevation help. Mild pain is managed with oral medication. Breathing through the nose is restricted. Rest at your hotel is recommended. Our patient coordinator checks in daily.
Days 4–6 — Gradual improvement
Bruising begins to fade
Bruising transitions from purple to yellow-green. Swelling begins to subside. Most patients feel well enough to take gentle walks and explore Istanbul. Discomfort is minimal by this stage.
Day 7 — Splint removal
First look at your new nose
The nasal splint and any internal supports are removed at Dr. Erdal's clinic. This is a quick, painless appointment. Patients see the new shape for the first time — note that swelling is still present and the final result will continue to refine. A final check-up is performed before you fly home.
Weeks 2–3 — Social recovery
Return to daily activities
Most bruising has resolved. Residual swelling is visible mainly to you and Dr. Erdal — most people around you will not notice it. Patients typically return to desk work and social activities. Avoid strenuous exercise.
Month 1–3 — Refinement phase
Major swelling resolves
60–70% of swelling has resolved. The nose takes on a more defined shape. Light exercise can resume at 4 weeks. Contact sports should be avoided for 3 months. Remote follow-up with Dr. Erdal via photo and video continues.
Month 3–6 — Settling
Shape continues to sharpen
Subtle refinement continues as residual swelling gradually resolves. The tip, which swells the most, continues to define. Most patients are very happy with the appearance at this stage.
Month 6–12 — Final result
Your nose reaches its final form
By 12 months, the vast majority of patients have reached their final result. Those with thicker skin may see subtle improvements continuing up to 18–24 months. Dr. Erdal follows all patients remotely until both surgeon and patient are satisfied with the outcome.
Closed rhinoplasty recovery vs open rhinoplasty
Closed rhinoplasty typically results in faster recovery compared to the open approach. Because there is no external incision and less tissue disruption, swelling resolves more quickly — particularly at the nasal tip, which is the last area to settle. Learn more in our detailed technique comparison.
Frequently asked questions about recovery
When can I fly home after rhinoplasty in Istanbul?
Most international patients fly home on day 7 after splint removal and a final check-up. There is no medical restriction on flying at this point. If you prefer a longer stay, Istanbul offers excellent options for a comfortable recovery.
When can I return to work?
Desk work: 7–10 days. Physical labour: 3–4 weeks. The main consideration is residual bruising, which can be covered with concealer from day 7 onwards.
When can I exercise after rhinoplasty?
Light exercise (walking, yoga): 2–3 weeks. Gym and cardio: 4 weeks. Contact sports: 3 months.
Will wearing glasses affect my result?
Avoid resting glasses directly on the nasal bridge for 6 weeks after surgery. Tape or a glasses splint can be used during this period.
